HERBICIDES

The following products are specialty water treatments that control a wide variety of aquatic plants.  While the purchase price initially appears high on products like Sonar and Avast, the fact that they treat a wide range of plants (often eliminating the need for multiple chemicals) and often provide multiple years of control makes them the best choice in many applications.

BEST SELLER! Hydrothol is a granular herbicide that is fast acting and effective on a variety of aquatic weeds including milfoil, coontail, hydrilla, sago pondweed, leafy pondweed, curly leaf pondweed and others.  Hydrothol should only be used for spot treating.  Use Aquathol, below, early in the season when plants are young and easier to treat.  Slight water restrictions.

Aquathol Super K is a granular and liquid herbicide that utilizes Culigel® super absorbent polymer technology.  It is six times more concentrated than regular Aquathol.  This means less product to handle, less labor to apply and reduced container disposal.  Excellent for spot treatment of hydrilla, pondweed and Eurasion milfoil.  Dosage rate is variable according to plant species.  Available in granular form in 10 and 25 pound containers or in 2½ gallon liquid form.

Komeen is a copper herbicide for use on elodea, hydrilla and other aquatic plants (see Treatment Chart).  No restrictions on water usage.  Dosage rates: 8 - 10 gallons per acre.  Komeen ships as hazardous material with additional charges via motor freight.

Navigate is a 2, 4-D based herbicide for control of water lilies, coontail, Eurasion milfoil, parrot feather, watershield and bladder wort.  Granular form makes it ideal for spot treating.  Dosage rate is 100 - 200 pounds per acre.  Slight water restrictions.  Navigate is also sold under the name Aqua-Kleen.

Weedtrine-D is a broad range herbicide that controls duckweed, coontail, elodea, naiad, pondweed and milfoil.  Weedtrine-D is applied by common sprayer.  Results often begin to show in as little as three days.  Five day water restriction.  Use with activator for best results.  Weedtrine is a restricted use pesticide in Michigan.  A copy of your pesticide applicators license must be shown to us in order to buy Weedtrine in Michigan.

Dosage rate: Duckweed = five to seven gallons per acre, Submersed weeds = five to ten gallons per acre

Reward Concentrated is a broad range herbicide that controls duckweed, coontail, elodea, naiad, pondweed and milfoil.  This liquid herbicide is applied by common sprayers and should not be applied to turbid waters.  There is very little risk of environmental damage since Reward's concentration rapidly decreases as it is absorbed into the aquatic vegetation.  Results often begin to show in as little as three days, five day water restriction.  Reward is a restricted use pesticide in the state of Michigan - a copy of your pesticide applicators license must be presented.  All other states are not restricted and can be shipped without certification.  Application rate is one to two gallons per acre.  Should be used with activator for best results.

Sonar
Sonar A.S. and RTU are herbicides that control a wide variety of aquatic plants, including stubborn duckweed. Treatments often last for several seasons, making it a cost effective treatment product. It works by stopping photosynthesis, which robs the plants of their ability to make food. Treated plants turn white and die within 6-12 weeks. Sonar effectively controls coontail, bladderwort, pondweed family, eurasion milfoil, fanwort, naiad, parrotfeather and select other aquatic plants.

Sonar RTU is a ready to use formula that can simply be poured right out of the bottle into three to four locations around the perimeter of the pond. No mixing, no need for sprayers or a boat! RTU is applied in three dosages, ½ of which is applied on day one followed by a second treatment of 25% at 21 days and the final 25% on day 42. Sepro is so confident in Sonar RTU's ability to work that it guarantees control provided the proper dosages and treatments are followed or it will make it right for you! RTU dosage rates (three treatments) ⅛ acre - one quart, ¼ acre - two quarts, ½ acre - four quarts, one acre - eight quarts.

Sonar A.S. is a concentrated formula that is applied by mixing with water and spraying over the surface of the pond. Ideally the total amount needed is divided into two equal applications 10-14 days apart.

            
Widely recognized as a great way to reduce phosphates and create crystal clear water. Alum is aluminum sulfate -  when the aluminum ions bond with the phosphate molecules they become insoluble in the water, no longer available as a nutrient. The aluminum ions also attract dirt particles which, when drawn together, become heavy and settle to the bottom resulting in sparkling clear water! The pH of the water must be below 8.2 before treating with Phosclear! Application rates vary from 17-70 lbs per acre foot of water.  For smaller applications click here.
